chronology
Peter Gabriel (Melt) (1980) Peter Gabriel (Security) Birdy (1985)

Peter Gabriel (Security) is the fourth album by the English musician Peter Gabriel , which was released in 1982 . Analogous to the three previous releases, the title is simply Peter Gabriel , with the US record company Geffen Records adding the title Security for marketing reasons . A version of the album with German lyrics was also released in 1982 with the title "Deutsches Album".

On the fully digitally recorded album, Gabriel established the synthesis of Western popular music , known as world music, with borrowings from traditional, non-Western forms of music in his oeuvre .

information

The recordings for the fourth album took place in 1981 in the house studio called Ashcombe House in Somerset , England , which was located in the immediate vicinity of today's Real World Studios . With this album, Gabriel worked on the influences of non-Western forms of music that were initially marginally used on Peter Gabriel (Melt) (1980) and enriched the musical spectrum of his work with electronic sounds from the Fairlight CMI sampler. The instrument, which was exorbitantly expensive for the time, allowed the playback of samples and loops of specially recorded sound events , which is a significant novelty in Gabriel's work.

The Rhythm of the Heat is based on the experiences of Carl Gustav Jung , who worked with African musicians. In San Jacinto , the fear of foreign infiltration of the Native Americans by modern Western society is addressed. In addition, Shock the Monkey is a reflection on jealousy and panic. The title is also part of the soundtrack to the film Project X, starring Matthew Broderick . In the 110th episode of South Park 's Shock the Monkey also be heard. Lay Your Hands on Me is about self-alienation, which has already been dealt with on Peter Gabriel's previous albums. Gabriel let himself fall onto the outstretched hands of the audience as a show element in the live performance of the title. He thus made a contribution to the popularization of stage diving . In The Family and the Fishing Net to look at the grueling aspects of married life is thrown. Wallflower is a piece about the situation of political prisoners and is part of the soundtrack of Alan Parker's Birdy , which Gabriel composed entirely.

In 2002 the album was released as a remastered version as part of the re-release of the entire back catalog.
