Roberto Laneri

Roberto Laneri (born March 25, 1945 in Arzignano ) is an Italian musician ( clarinets , soprano saxophone , overtone singing , synthesizer ) and composer .

Live and act

Laneri first studied philosophy at the University of Rome before studying clarinet at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome and at the State University of New York, Buffalo ; in Buffalo , he also studied composition (MA) before 1975 at the University of California, San Diego about Prima Materia: An Opus in Progress; the Natural Dimension of Music . Between 1965 and 1968 he worked as a musician in the Italian free jazz scene with Bruno Tommaso , Giancarlo Schiaffini , Mario Schiano , Marcello Melis and Franco Tonani. As a student he founded the Jazz in Progress Orchestra in the USA . Between 1970 and 1972 he performed works by Lejaren Hiller and Lukas Foss , including in the Carnegie Recital Hall . In 1971 and 1972 he was part of Petr Kotík's SEM Ensemble , with whom he performed the songbooks by John Cage in Cologne and Berlin. He performed with Frederic Rzewski at the Metamusik Berlin Festival (1972).

In 1972 he began to compose more and more and to deal with new vocal techniques. In 1973 he founded the Ensemble Materia Prima with other overtone singers , which specialized in drone sounds , released the album Tail of the Tiger in 1977 and existed until 1980. In 1984 he was involved with Christian Bollmann , Jochen Vetter and other overtone singers in the recordings in the temporarily closed drinking water reservoir Severin in Cologne ( Before the Flood ). Since 1985 he has presented various recordings under his own name. As a woodwind player, he was also involved in the recordings of Charles Mingus ' Music for “Todo Modo” (1976) and Peter Gabriel's Security (1981).
