Petr Kotík

Petr Kotík (born January 27, 1942 in Prague ) is a Czech composer.

Life

The son of the painter Jan Kotík studied flute at the Prague Conservatory with František Čech and then at the Vienna Music Academy with Hans Reznicek . From 1960 to 1963 he took private composition lessons with Jan Rychlík in Prague, after which he continued his training in Vienna with Karl Schiske , Hanns Jelinek and Friedrich Cerha until 1966 .

He is the founder of the ensemble Musica Viva Pragensis (1961) and the ensemble for experimental music Quax (1966). After the crackdown on the Prague Spring , he emigrated to the USA in 1969 and, at the invitation of Lejaren Hiller and Lukas Foss, joined the Center of the Creative and Performing Arts at the University at Buffalo . With the SEM Ensemble , which he founded , he organized annual series of concerts in New York and toured the USA and Europe.

From 1971 to 1977 Kotík taught flute at the University at Buffalo. From 1977 he worked on the publication of the complete musical works of Marcel Duchamp , which appeared on LP in 1978 and on CD in 1991. Since the early 1980s he also worked as a conductor, concentrating on the work of John Cage .

In 1991 he founded the Orchestra of the SEM Ensemble , which quickly made a name for itself as an orchestra for contemporary music , premiering works by David First , Somei Satoh , Leo Smith and devoting itself to the works of Feldman , Cage and Varese . In 2000 he founded the Ostrava Center for New Music , which organizes a festival and summer institute in Ostrava in odd years , and an opera festival since 2012 in even years.
