Scratch My Back ( scratch my back ) is a 2010 released album of the singer Peter Gabriel .

Data

It was released in Australia and Germany on February 12, in the UK on February 15 and in the USA on March 2, 2010. It was recorded by Associated Independent Recording and Real World Studios in 2009 and produced by Gabriel with Bob Ezrin . The orchestra arrangements were made by the New Zealand composer John Metcalfe .

background

The album is a cover album with sometimes more, sometimes less known songs in arrangements for classical orchestra. In doing so, Peter Gabriel and the arranger strictly adhered to the self-imposed maxim "no drums, no guitars" - so they refrained from using drums and guitars.

The idea behind Scratch My Back was that the original interpreters of the pieces selected by Peter Gabriel should in return play songs by Gabriel in their own interpretation. This material was to be released on a separate album for which the title And I'll Scratch Yours was intended. The overall title of the project Scratch My Back - I'll Scratch Yours (English: “You scratch my back, then I'll scratch yours” or “one hand washes the other”) emphasizes the mutuality of the new recordings.

The second album did not appear at first, as all musicians had signaled their readiness for the project (except for Neil Young, Radiohead and David Bowie, who was then to be represented by Brian Eno), but only six cover versions of Gabriel songs were actually recorded were. They were then published as a download via iTunes . The second album was finally released on September 24, 2013.

effect

Originally only operated as a side project, contrary to the expectations of the record company EMI and Gabriel himself , the album had great success. The chart position in Germany was better than that of his last regular studio album. The live presentation, originally scheduled for only four concerts, was expanded several times and finally had over 50 dates in Europe, North and South America between 2010 and 2012. For the concerts, compositions by Gabriel were also put into an orchestral arrangement. These were finally released in 2011 as a separate album entitled New Blood . In addition, a DVD with a concert recording and a live double album derived from it was released.
