William Wharton (born November 7, 1925 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † October 29, 2008 in Encinitas , California ; actually Albert William Du Aime ) was an American writer. He became internationally known with his first novel Birdy , which was also successfully made into a film.

Wharton's work is strongly influenced by autobiographical elements, especially by his time as a soldier in World War II. He was 52 years old when his first novel Birdy was published. Until then he worked mostly as a painter.

Birdy first appeared in German in the 1980s, as did Die Nacht in den Ardennen (1986) and Father (Dad) (1987). In the 1990s, Franky - the Fox (1992) and The Last Lovers of Paris (1994) were added as German editions.
