The company supplies power to the Western Pennsylvania, Western Maryland, Northern Western Virginia, and Northwest Virginia areas. Allegheny Energy generates 95% from coal-fired power plants. Power plants are located north of Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania (Allegheny Power), south of Pittsburgh (West Penn Power), West Virginia (Monongahela Power), west of Maryland and north Virginia (Potomac Edison Power) and in West Virginia (Mountaineer Gas) .

In early 2006, Allegheny Energy sold the power supply in eastern Ohio to its competitor American Electric Power .

On February 28, 2011 Allegheny Energy was taken over by FirstEnergy .
