Witness (human rights organization)

Witness (from English to witness 'something with experience', 'witness something') is a US human rights organization based in Brooklyn , New York City . It was founded in 1992 by Peter Gabriel with the support of Human Rights First . The aim of the organization is to use authentic video recordings to prove and denounce human rights abuses worldwide.

In 2011, 29 activists worked there, with a total budget of five million dollars. In 2007 a portal was created on The Hub to anonymously upload videos of human rights violations. For example, the witness activist Bukeni Waruzi spent six years collecting video footage of Congolese children who were forcibly recruited as soldiers . It is to flow into the trial against Thomas Lubanga at the International Criminal Court , the first ever trial at the ICC.
