Jacob (Joop) Admiraal (born September 26, 1937 in Ophemert, Gelderland , † March 25, 2006 in Amsterdam , Noord-Holland ) was a Dutch actor, author and filmmaker.

Life

He attended the Kunstnijverheidsschool for a year , then from 1955 the Toneelschool drama school in Amsterdam. After graduating in 1959, he made his debut with the Nederlandse Comedie. Admiraal first tried to gain a foothold in Italian film and was then a member of experimental theater groups, from 1971 onwards with the influential Amsterdam group Het Werkteater . She developed her own pieces, which mainly dealt with the problems of socially marginalized groups.

After the factory theater ended in 1984, Admiraal joined the Toneelgroep Amsterdam, which was founded in 1987. In this function he participated in numerous theater performances in both classical and modern roles. Especially for him and his colleague Kitty Courbois, the American author Richard Maxwell wrote the play Good Samaritans , which premiered in 2002/03. He was also seen several times in films, some of which were productions by the factory theater and the Toneelgroep. The day before his death he was playing at the Bellevue Theater in Amsterdam.

Awards

Admiraal was awarded the Louis d'Or for his solo piece You are my mother ( U bent mijn Moeder ) from 1981, in which the actor plays both the son and the Alzheimer's mother. This play was made into a film in 1983 and received the Pulitzer Prize. In Germany, Admiraal (together with Horst Königstein ) was awarded the Gold Adolf Grimme Prize in 1983 .
