Carl Deal (* 1965) is an American producer and director in the field of documentary film , who mainly attracted attention with his film Trouble the Water . The Columbia University awarded him the prize for social justice. Deal has also written investigative reports on environmental, civil and criminal law for Greenpeace , Amnesty International and Public Citizen.

biography

Carl Deal, who grew up in the Midwest and Mexico , graduated from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1994 . As a radio news producer and journalist, he reported from the United States, Latin America and Iraq .

Deal has been co-producer of various Michael Moore films since 2002 , including the 2004 production team for Moore's documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 , the title of which refers to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and, among other things, the business connections of the US President's family George W. Bush lit to Arab business people. Deal was also involved in the documentary film The War on Democracy by Chris Martin and John Pilger in 2007. The film explores the role that Washington has played in manipulating Latin American politics over the past 50 years, and which has fueled the struggle of the abandoned against poverty and racism.

Together with his partner and colleague Tia Lessin , Deal shot the documentary Trouble the Water , published in 2008 , which was also produced by both of them. The duo had worked together on Michael Moore's documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 back in 2004 . Trouble the Water portrays the fate of a couple trapped in their New Orleans home when Hurricane Katrina struck in August 2005 . The film has received numerous awards, for example at the Sundance Film Festival , where it received the Grand Jury Prize in the “Best Documentary” category. In addition to various other awards, the film was nominated for an Oscar in 2009 in the “Best Documentary” category. Deal also co-produced Michael Moore's documentary Capitalism: A Love Story . The subject of the film is the financial crisis from 2007 and the US economy in transition between the end of the term of office of George W. Bush and the beginning of the term of office of Barack Obama .

Deal and Tia Lessin worked together again for the 2013 documentary drama Citzien Koch . The circumstances that led to the rise of the Tea Party after the decision of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission at the United States Supreme Court , with two of the richest men in the world allegedly involved. The 2016 documentary Michael Moore in TrumpLand was produced by Moore and Carl Deal. It shows Donald Trump's election campaign and who his supporters are. The 2018 documentary Michael Moore, in which Deal was involved, also deals with the 2016 presidential election in the United States and the subsequent presidency of Donald Trump. With his title Fahrenheit 11/9 he goes back to the 2004 documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 . Both film titles are based on Ray Bradbury's dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 .

The filmmaker lives and works with his partner Tia Lessin in Brooklyn, New York .
