The new (Original title: New Boy ) is an Irish short film by the director Steph Green from 2007 . He was nominated for an Oscar in 2009. It is the film adaptation of the short story of the same name by Roddy Doyle .

action

The film is set primarily in an Irish school with the occasional recap in a classroom in Africa. The teacher introduces Joseph, a black boy, to his new class and assigns him a place. Soon he is annoyed by the Irish boy Christian Kelly sitting behind him. The teacher intervenes and gives the children math problems. Joseph remembers a day at his old school when his father, who was then a teacher, was also teaching math. When Christian provokes him again, Joseph painfully bends his finger. The teacher separates them, but Christian threatens Joseph that he will soon be dead.

During the break, Joseph remembers the school day in Africa. After his classmates left, he talked to his father. Suddenly two armed men entered the room. Joseph was able to hide, but had to watch the men lead his father out of the room. When he followed them and looked after them from the door, shots rang out and Joseph closed his eyes in horror. At the same moment he is in the presence in the playground of a water bomb hit. Christian and his friend Seth Quinn come up to him threateningly and push him in the chest. Joseph defends himself by reaching for Christian's finger again, which makes him hesitate.

Then Joseph, Christian and Seth are confronted by the teacher. However, none of them want to comment on the incident. Her classmate Hazel O'Hara, who was previously noticed as an ambitious "sneak", tries to inform the teacher, but is sent away. As she leaves, Hazel curses, whereupon the teacher follows her and rebukes her. Christian jokes about the rigid disciplinary measures taken by the teacher and Joseph mimics her voice. All three laugh. Joseph remembers happy moments with his father and smiles at the returning teacher. She gives up and leads the boys back into the classroom.

background

After Steph Green read Roddy Doyle's short story New Boy in the multicultural newspaper Metro Éireann , she came up with the idea of a film adaptation. She wrote Doyle a letter and was able to win him over to work together. She wrote the script herself, but consulted him regularly. The Irish Film Board and RTÉ provided funding.

It took about 12 months from the planning to the completion of the film. The casting of the main actors took a lot of time, as Green made high demands on their authenticity . Joseph's role was last cast after the search had been extended across Ireland to the United Kingdom. Some of the children appearing in the film were amateur actors with no prior knowledge, others attended various drama schools in Dublin . Simon O'Driscoll was previously in the Irish soap Fair City and the drama Die Journalistin in front of the camera.

The actual filming lasted five days and took place exclusively in Ireland. The main story was filmed in a school, while the one-day “Africa scenes” were filmed in a former military barracks.

The film was produced by Dublin- based Zanzibar Films and distributed worldwide by Network Ireland Television. The premiere took place on July 14, 2007 at the Irish film festival Galway Film Fleadh . It was then shown at over 20 festivals around the world, including the 2008 Berlinale .

reception

The film met with a positive response at its screenings and, apart from the Oscar nomination, won several other awards. The Tribeca Film Festival jury voted him Best Narrative Short in 2008 and commented on their choice: “New boy took us on a complete emotional journey. It was moving, funny, and powerful. " (German: " The new one took us on a very emotional journey. It was moving, funny and powerful.").
