Nhem En is a photographer. At the age of 16 he worked as a portrait photographer in the Tuol Sleng prison of the Khmer Rouge in Phnom Penh , Cambodia . Between 1975 and 1979, more than 17,000 people were registered there, photographed, then arrested, tortured and killed. Only eight survived. Three of the survivors talk about their experiences. Bou Meng was 34 years old. He survived because the prison authorities needed an artist to paint a portrait of Pol Pot . Chum Mey , 42 years old, could repair and adjust sewing machines. Chim Math, then 20, doesn't know why she survived.

In 2009 the film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Documentary Short Film.
