John Nelson (special effects artist)

John Nelson (born July 21, 1953 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American film technician who specializes in visual effects .

Life

After graduating from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of General Studies degree in 1976 , he made several films that received several awards at film festivals. In 1979 he moved to California to work for Robert Abel and Associates, first as a cameraman , then as technical director, and finally as a director . In 1987 he moved to Germany to work for mental images GmbH . Upon returning to the US, Nelson started working for Industrial Light & Magic , where he animated some key scenes for Terminator 2 - Judgment Day . After a few more films for Rhythm & Hues Studios and Sony Pictures Imageworks , Nelson left the Sony company in 1998 to become Senior VFX and provided the visual effects for Gladiator , for which he received an Oscar . Other films such as I, Robot and Iron Man , for which he both received another Oscar nomination , followed.

John Nelson is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , the Visual Effects Society , the Cinematographers Guild, and the Directors Guild of America .
