Craig Barron (born April 6, 1961 in Berkeley , California ) is an American special effects and matte-paiting artist. In 2009, The Strange Case of Benjamin Button won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects .

Life

At the age of 18 he started working for Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). He was the youngest employee at ILM, who worked in the matte painting area on the feature film The Empire Strikes Back . In the following years he worked for ILM on films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and ET - The Extra-Terrestrial . From 1984 he was Head of Photography in the Matte Department. In this position he made films such as Star Trek III: In Search of Mr. Spock , In Search of the Golden Child and The Miracle on 8th Street .

In 1988, together with Michael Pangrazio and Krystyna Demkowicz, he founded the special effects company Matte World , which was renamed Matte World Digital in 1992 . With this company he worked on countless films as a matte painting artist in the following years. In 1993 he was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects for his work on the feature film Batman Returns , but the award received Death Suits Her . When he was nominated for the second time in 2009 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , he finally received the award along with Eric Barba , Steve Preeg and Burt Dalton . In 2012 the company was dissolved.
