occupation

Rescue Dawn is a war film by Werner Herzog . The film is based on Herzog's documentary Escape from Laos (1997).

The film tells the story of German-American fighter pilot Dieter Dengler (played by Christian Bale ), who during the Vietnam war over Laos was shot down and in the greatest danger to life from a POW camp with North Vietnam and the Vietcong allied Pathet Lao was able to escape.

action

The plane owned by Dieter Dengler, a United States Navy pilot , is shot down in a secret bombing over Laos. He survived the crash but is captured by a Pathet Lao militia . He is offered to treat him graciously if he signs a document condemning US actions. Dengler refuses and is then severely tortured.

Dengler is taken to a prisoner-of-war camp deep in the jungle, where he meets five other prisoners. When they discover that their guards are planning to kill the prisoners in the jungle due to food shortages and make it look like an attempted escape, they decide to flee. It was agreed that the guards would only be overpowered to steal rifles and road supplies, but Gene and three other prisoners went away. Dengler finally continues the escape alone with Duane.

The two make their way south through the jungle; their flight is characterized by a lot of hardship and a steadily deteriorating physical condition. When they come across a village, the residents are very surprised and attack them. Duane is seriously injured in the thigh by the villagers and finally beheaded. Dengler manages to escape and from then on is alone in the jungle. He also has to struggle with himself: because he hears voices and constantly suffers from hunger. Later, Dengler is finally discovered by a US airplane and a little later rescued to a military airfield by helicopter. In the hospital, he is shielded because he was a participant in a secret operation and is recovering under the eyes of the CIA. During an interrogation in the hospital by agents of the CIA who apparently decide to take him to Guam , comrades from his unit smuggle him out of the hospital and bring him back to his aircraft carrier, where the crew welcomes him back with cheers.

Reviews

In his review, Julian Hanich from Tagesspiegel called the film a "story of passion and resurrection" and a "late success for director Werner Herzog": "With" Rescue Dawn "he once again pulls out all his stops." The lexicon of international films spoke of a “song of praise to human integrity and self-assertion, filmed in authentic locations as exciting as it is sensitive.” In the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Tobias Kniebe was impressed by the interaction between director and actors: “The most exciting thing is Herzog's intense encounter with a new Anglo-American generation of actors. "The deep correspondence between them makes the film" despite all the external torments, despite the torture of ants and worm eating and snake hunting, also a duke film of almost paradoxical nonchalance. "

“A good film, maybe even a great film. But something is missing [...] "

- Ken Hanke : Mountain Xpress

"A little miracle - a smart popcorn movie "

- Kirk Honeycutt : The Hollywood Reporter
