Vasco is a first name and family name .

Origin and meaning

Vasco is a male given name of Spanish or Portuguese origin that was borrowed in the 1970s and developed from Velasco / Belasco, a name of Basque origin that was common on the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages (probably to Basque belatz "crow"). The name form is therefore not derived from the identical adjective vasco "Basque, Basque". The name became known through Vasco da Gama . It is common as a first and family name. The Spanish family names Vásquez and Vázquez are derived from Vasco in patronymic formation .
