The cave of forgotten dreams (original title: Cave of Forgotten Dreams ) is a 3D documentary film by the German director Werner Herzog from 2010.

The film shows Werner Herzog's visits to the Chauvet Cave in the south of France with a three-person film team. The unique cave paintings , handprints, bone remnants and crystal formations are accompanied by music, and Werner Herzog describes his own impressions. Between the scenes, scientists are interviewed who reveal their findings about the prehistoric site.

Werner Herzog was fascinated by cave paintings since childhood. He received special permission for the Chauvet Cave, which is not public. The team was only allowed to film for four hours on six days and was not allowed to leave the metal catwalk on the floor. In addition, protective suits had to be worn. The documentary premiered on September 13, 2010 at the Toronto International Film Festival .
