David Lindley (born March 21, 1944 in San Marino , California ) is an American multi-instrumentalist and singer who was nicknamed “Prince Of Polyester” because of his often colorful and deliberately poorly combined clothes. Lindley is considered one of the leading slide guitarists .

Life

At 14 he began to learn the guitar; as a teenager he played banjo and fiddle and won the Topanga Canyon banjo and fiddle contests several times .

In 1966 he founded the group Kaleidoscope together with Chris Darrow and introduced the popular music world to string instruments such as oud and saz , which were still unusual at the time . The great commercial success failed to materialize.

From 1971 to 1980 he was the band leader and guitarist of Jackson Browne's band and an irregular part of the session band The Section . Lindley's playing on the steel guitar was a defining style element of this band. Then he founded his own band El Rayo-X .

After problems with record companies, Lindley began to market his records himself and from then on went on tour mostly alone or with only one companion, also regularly in Germany. In 2006 he did this with Jackson Browne.

With the Jordan-born percussionist Hani Naser he recorded records until 1990, including Official Bootleg . He then went on tour with Wally Ingram , also a percussionist, and recorded the record Twango Bango Deluxe among others .

Lindley also works a lot as a studio musician . With Ry Cooder, he recorded the albums Bop till you drop and The Long Riders , with Bob Dylan the album Under the Red Sky , with Iggy Pop the album Brick By Brick , between 1975 and 1995 four albums with Rod Stewart and with Henry Kaiser die Albums A World out of Time (in Madagascar ) and The Sweet Sunny North (in Norway ).
