Maurice Merle
Maurice Merle (born April 27, 1945 in Le Puy ; † April 2, 2003 in Lyon ) was a French jazz saxophonist and composer of imaginary folklore .
Merle became a jazz musician after graduating from a business school . In 1968, together with Jean Méreu , Jean Bolcato and Pierre Guyon, he founded the Free Jazz Workshop, which initially operated almost exclusively in the southern French province . Together with Christian Rollet he founded La Carrérarie, a music theater for children. Since 1972 he has been working for Partly with Steve Waring and Alain Gibert , created numerous pieces (from Opéra Jubjub to Prismo ). In 1977 he was one of the founders of the Association à la Recherche d'un Folklore Imaginaire and played in most of the important groups in the Lyon musician collective. He toured with the jazz bands Workshop de Lyon and Marmite Infernale in South America, Europe, North and East Africa and the Middle East.
For three years he was the president of the CNAJMI , which brings together the French organizations of jazz and improvisation musicians. 164 of his compositions and arrangements are registered with the French collecting society SACEM . On the remix album Chant bien fatal in 2011 , Guy Villerd and Xavier Garcia reinterpreted important compositions of his with other musicians from the Association à la Recherche d'un Folklore Imaginaire .
