French Rugby Union Championship 1978/79

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1978/79 season was the 80th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 40 teams in the top division (today's top 14 ).

The championship was divided into two phases. It began with the group stage, in which ten teams played against each other in four groups. The top seven in each group made it to the knockout round, as did the four group winners in Division B. This was followed by the sixteenth, eighth, quarter and semi-finals. In the final, which took place on May 27, 1979 in the Parc des Princes in Paris , the two semi-final winners met and played for the Bouclier de Brennus . The RC Narbonne prevailed against Stade Bagnérais and won the championship title for the second time.
