French Rugby Union Championship 1995/96

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1995/96 season was the 97th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 20 teams in the top division (today's top 14 ).

The championship was divided into three phases. It began with the qualifying round, in which ten teams played against each other in two groups. The top four of both groups went straight to the knockout round, while the teams in places 5 to 8 played in a barrage with the best teams in the second division for eligibility in the knockout round . The last two in both groups were relegated; this concerned Aviron Bayonnais , Racing Club de France , FCS Rumilly and Montpellier RC .

The home game of the knockout round, in which 16 teams were still involved, resulted from the better placement in the qualifying round. The quarter-finals and the semi-finals followed the round of 16. The two semi-final winners met in the final, which took place on June 1, 1996 at the Parc des Princes in Paris , and played for the Bouclier de Brennus . Here sat Stade Toulousain against CA Brive through and won for the 13th time the championship.
