The 1986/87 season was the 88th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 40 teams in the top division (today's top 14 ).
The championship was divided into two phases. It began with the group stage, in which eight teams played against each other in four groups. The higher-ranking “elite” teams were divided into groups 1 and 2, from which the top five qualified for the knockout round. From groups 3 and 4 with the lower-rated teams, the top three qualified. This was followed by the eighth, quarter and semi-finals. In the final, which took place on May 2, 1987 in the Parc des Princes in Paris , the two semi-final winners met and played for the Bouclier de Brennus . The RC Toulon prevailed against the Racing Club de France and won the championship title for the second time.
