The Sporting Club Albigeois ( SC Albi for short ) is a rugby union club from the French town of Albi in the Tarn department . He plays in the second highest French league Pro D2 . The home games are played at the Municipal Stadium.

history

The SC Albi was founded in December 1906 as a general sports club, in which tennis and athletics were also practiced. But rugby soon became far more important than any other sport. In 1926, the team won their first title with the Pyrenees Championship, in the final Stade Toulousain was beaten.

In 1940, the Vichy regime forced all sports clubs in cities with fewer than 50,000 inhabitants to merge. Vichy also took action against the professionally practiced sport of rugby league , which is why SC Albi and RC Albi XIII were forcibly merged into Albi Olympique . From 1945 both clubs went their own ways again. In 1949 SC Albi rose to the highest French league.

The team reached the round of 16 of the championship in 1955 after defeating the renowned Racing Club de France , but then lost to US Romans. Until the 1980s, there was a constant change between the highest and second highest league (Division 1 1961-1970, 1973-75 and 1977-79; Division 2 1957-59, 1970-73, 1975-77, 1979-85). The only notable success was in 1974 reaching the round of 16 of the championship, which was lost to CA Brive . From 1985 SC Albi stayed in the third division (today's Fédérale 1 )

In 2000, 2001 and 2002 SC Albi advanced to the final of the third division, but lost each time (against FC Oloron-Sainte-Marie, US Oyonnax and US Tours). However, in 2002 there were two promotion places available for the professional Pro D2 and Albi was back in the second division. In 2006 the team made it into the top 14. After two seasons, SC Albi was relegated to the Pro D2 for financial reasons. In 2008 they were immediately promoted again, but after only one season they were relegated again.
