The 2003/04 season was the 105th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 16 teams each in the top division Top 16 and the second highest division Pro D2 .

Top 16

The regular season of the Top 16 had a preliminary and a second round, whereby the teams were divided into two rating groups. The top four in each case qualified for the playoffs, consisting of two groups of four. The two best of both playoff groups made it to the semi-finals. In the final, which took place on June 26, 2004 in the Stade de France , the semi-final winners played for the Bouclier de Brennus championship trophy . Here triumphed Stade Français against USA Perpignan and won for the twelfth time the championship.

At the same time as the playoffs there was a round of relegation with the four worst teams of the regular season. After a preliminary and second round, the last two were relegated : While the US Montauban relegated to the Pro D2 , the US Colomiers was relegated to the amateur league Fédérale 1 , because the club no longer received a professional license due to financial problems.

The points were distributed as follows:

  • 3 points if you win
  • 2 points if there is a tie
  • 1 point if you lose
  • 0 points for a forfait

The regular season lasted 30 game days (one first and one second round). The four best-ranked teams carried out a playoff for promotion, consisting of semi-finals and finals. The final winner FC Auch became champion of the Pro D2 and rose together with the final loser Aviron Bayonnais .

Originally, the last two teams should have relegated to the Amateur League Fédérale 1 . Due to financial problems, the US Colomiers from the top 16 did not receive a professional license. As a result, there was only one relegated team in the Pro D2. However, it was not the last-placed CA Périgueux that rose, but the CA Bordeaux-Bègles Gironde , which also no longer received a professional license.
