The 2002/03 season was the 104th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 16 teams each in the top division Top 16 and the second highest division Pro D2 .

Top 16

The regular season of the Top 16 had a preliminary and a second round, whereby the teams were divided into two rating groups. The top four in each case qualified for the playoffs, consisting of two groups of four. The two best of both playoff groups made it to the semi-finals. In the final, which took place on June 7, 2003 in the Stade de France , the semi-final winners played for the Bouclier de Brennus championship trophy . Here triumphed Stade Français against Stade Toulousain and won the league title for the eleventh time.

At the same time as the playoffs there was a round of relegation with the four worst teams of the regular season. After a preliminary and second round, the last two were relegated : Stade Montois was relegated from the bottom of the group to the Pro D2 , while the CA Bordeaux-Bègles was relegated for financial reasons. The worse classified AS Béziers remained in the top division for this reason.

The points were distributed as follows:

  • 3 points if you win
  • 2 points if there is a tie
  • 1 point if you lose
  • 0 points for a forfait

The regular season lasted 30 game days (one first and one second round). The best-ranked team, the CA Brive , climbed straight into the top 16. The teams in places 2 to 4 carried out together with the CA Brive a playoff for the second promotion place, consisting of semi-finals and finals. The Montpellier RC , who also became champion of the Pro D2, secured the promotion . Two teams had to relegate to the Amateur League Fédérale 1 , the US Marmande and the RC Aubenas Vals .
