The 2011/12 season was the 113th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 14 teams in the top division Top 14 and 16 teams in the second highest division Pro D2 .

Top 14

The regular season of the Top 14 had 26 game days (one first and one second round). It began on August 26, 2011 and lasted until May 13, 2012. The two best-placed teams qualified directly for the semifinals and met the winners of the barrage games, which were played between the third to sixth place. The semi-final winners met in the final on June 9, 2012 and played for the Bouclier de Brennus championship trophy at the Stade de France . Defending champion Stade Toulousain prevailed against RC Toulon and won the championship title for the 19th time. The last two teams, the CA Brive and the Lyon Olympique Universitaire , had to relegate to the Pro D2.

    The regular season of the Pro D2 consisted of 30 game days (one first and one second round). It began on September 3, 2011 and lasted until May 12, 2012. The best-placed team, FC Grenoble , rose straight away. The teams in places 2 to 5 contested a playoff for the second promotion place, which Stade Montois was able to secure on May 27, 2012. Two teams had to relegate to the Amateur League Fédérale 1 , the US Colomiers and the CA Saint-Étienne . The last-placed CA Périgueux was relegated to the amateur league Fédérale 1, as did the ninth-placed CS Bourgoin-Jallieu , who did not receive a professional license for financial reasons.
