The 2008/09 season was the 110th edition of the French Rugby Union Championship. It comprised 14 teams in the top division Top 14 and 16 teams in the second highest division Pro D2 .

Top 14

The regular season of the Top 14 had 26 game days (one first and one second round). It began on August 26, 2008 and lasted until May 16, 2009. The four best-placed teams qualified for the semi-finals. In the final, which took place on June 6, 2009 at the Stade de France , the semi-final winners played for the Bouclier de Brennus championship trophy . The USA Perpignan won the championship title for the seventh time, while ASM Clermont Auvergne failed in a final for the tenth time. The last two teams, the US Dax and Stade Montois , had to relegate to the Pro D2.

    The regular season of the Pro D2 consisted of 30 game days (one first and one second round). It began on September 7, 2008 and lasted until May 17, 2009. The best-placed team, Racing Métro 92 , rose straight away. The teams in places 2 to 5 contested a playoff for the second promotion place, which SC Albi was able to secure on June 8, 2009. Two teams had to relegate to the amateur league Fédérale 1 , the US Bressane and the AS Béziers .
