origin
Adolph Detlef von Usedom came from the old Pomeranian noble family of Usedom . His parents were Jakob Friedrich von Usedom, royal Swedish lieutenant colonel in the body regiment of the queen and Margarethe also born from Usedom.
Military career
From Usedom, when he was 15 years old, he joined the army in his father's regiment and became a flag boy there . In 1743 he changed to Austrian services and took part in the fighting on the Rhine.
In 1745 he changed to Prussian service and was a cornet in Hussar Regiment No. 5 . With this regiment took part in the battle near Hennersdorf . In 1750 he was promoted to second lieutenant and in 1756 to prime lieutenant. During the Seven Years' War he was initially stationed in East Prussia and was able to distinguish himself in the battle near Kattenau (Kumehlen) on August 1, 1757 and took part in the battle of Groß-Jägersdorf . He then joined the army of Duke Ferdinand von Braunschweig and in 1759, as a lieutenant, captured 60 soldiers of the Volontaires d'Alsace regiment .
Usedom gained the reputation of an excellent hussar leader. He was promoted to captain and squadron chief in 1759 . On November 20, 1763, he was promoted to major . He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1767, although 33 other majors were ahead of him in the ranking. In 1769 the Prussian King sent him to Russia to take part in the war against the Turks. He fought on the Dniester and in the Moldova region . When he left, Prince General Galizin gave him a Turkish tent and four camels.
After his return, von Usedom became the commander of Hussar Regiment No. 5 and, on July 27, 1775, Chief of Hussar Regiment No. 7 . With this he fought in the Bavarian War of Succession . When crossing the Elbe at Leitmeritz , he distinguished himself and was appointed major general on September 22, 1778, contrary to customary practice.
In 1784, Usedom was given 2000 thalers by King Friedrich II . On May 24, 1787, the king promoted him to lieutenant general and he received another 2000 thalers to buy a house in his garrison in Schneidemühl . In 1788 he received his own corps in West Prussia, with which he marched to Silesia in July 1790 when tension arose with Austria. As early as 1789 he had received the Order of the Black Eagle .
family
Von Usedom was married to Anna Marie Sophie Holencamp and had two sons from this marriage and an illegitimate daughter. His daughter Henriette was married to the District Justice Council Christoph von Zacha († March 1813).
The Prussian major general Friedrich von Usedom was his nephew.
