Andrei Antanassowitsch Kantschelskis ( Russian Андрей Антанасович Канчельскис ) (born January 23, 1969 in Kirowohrad , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Ukrainian - Russian - Soviet football player who took over Russian citizenship after the collapse of the Soviet Union . KanKan played for a number of football clubs, the most prominent of which were Manchester United , Everton FC and the Glasgow Rangers . He was a dynamic, fast-paced winger who was also dangerous on goals.

Club career

The beginnings

Kantschelskis started his career in 1988 at Dynamo Kiev and moved to Shakhtar Donetsk in 1990 .

Manchester United

A year later he signed with Manchester United for £ 650,000 . He made his first game for the new club on May 11, 1991 against Crystal Palace . With the club he was twice English champion (1993 and 1994), he also won the FA Cup in 1994 . He was also on the pitch in the 1993/94 league cup final, but after being sent off for handball, United lost to Aston Villa . In total, he ran 158 times for the club, scoring 36 goals.

Everton

In 1995, Kantschelskis was sold to Everton FC , which had recently won the FA Cup . In his first year at the new club, he scored 16 goals, crowning an excellent season in which he was arguably the best winger in the country. He also quickly gained cult status with Everton supporters, especially since he scored twice against old rivals from Liverpool FC on Anfield Road and his performances drove the club to sixth place in the Premier League , the best result that Everton has had for years. But in the second season Kantschelskis failed to repeat his top performance and was sold to Fiorentina for £ 8 million .

Later career

At Fiorentina he fought again for his best form and later played for the Glasgow Rangers (1998-2002), Manchester City (2001) (on loan), FC Southampton (2003), Al-Hilal (2003), the Saturn Ramenskoje (2004 –2005) and Krylja Sowetow Samara (2006). After he had left Krylya Sovetov, he was without a contract; despite his interest in continuing his career, he ended it on February 12, 2007.

International career

Although Kantschelskis was born in Ukraine and his family is from Lithuania , he chose to represent Russia internationally. He was called up 23 times for the national soccer team of the USSR , scoring 3 goals, and 36 times for Russia , 5 goals. But after leading a player boycott against head coach Pavel Sadyrin , he missed the 1994 World Cup , so the only major tournaments he played as a senior international were the 1992 European Football Championship and the 1996 European Football Championship .
