Volker Benes (born January 2, 1947 ) was a football player and coach in the GDR . He played six times in the GDR junior national team .

Athletic career

Benes, who later played football at SC since 1963, later FC Karl-Marx-Stadt , was initially one of the promising football talents of the GDR. In 1965 he was a member of the youth national team that won the UEFA youth tournament held in Germany. He played the preparatory game on March 18, 1965 (GDR-Austria 2-0) and all five tournament games. In addition to playing soccer, he also completed an apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer. With the 1965/66 season, the 1.76 m tall defender was eligible to play for the men's area, but was only used once in the Karl-Marx-Städter league team. He suffered the same fate in the 1966/67 season, in which the FCK surprisingly and superiorly became GDR champions. In the summer of 1967 Benes moved to local rivals Wismut Aue , but only played there once in the first division team. Several times his development was thrown back by injuries. In the 1969/70 season he was part of the squad of the league relegated 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . In the second-rate GDR league , he finally got better and played 17 point and 5 cup games. On June 13, 1970, FC Lok was in the final of the GDR soccer cup . Benes came on when the score was 2: 3 in the 79th minute, but could no longer prevent FC Vorwärts Berlin's 4-2 victory.

Other stations as soccer players are not transmitted. In the early 1970s, Benes started his coaching career. After a brief employment as an assistant coach at the GDR football association, he took over the training of the 2nd team of the Berlin FC Dynamo , which played in the second-rate GDR league. In 1974 the following reports went through the German press:

“As has only now been confirmed from Western Allied circles, the escape of the 30-year-old East Berlin soccer coach Volker Benes failed before Pentecost. He coached the second team of BFC Dynamo Berlin playing in the "DDR" league. Benes had tried to pass the "Checkpoint Charlie" crossing for foreigners in Berlin in an American soldier's uniform. Benes was arrested by "GDR" border soldiers after individual parts of the uniform had been recognized as out of date. ” (Hamburger Abendblatt, June 11, 1974)

“Susan Bailantine, 22 year old Englishwoman, was sentenced to five years imprisonment in East Berlin for aiding and abetting" unlawful border crossing ". She had tried to bring her East Berlin friend, the soccer coach Volker Benes, to the Federal Republic via transit routes. ” (DIE ZEIT, September 27, 1974)

Later press releases indicate that Susan Bailantine was deported to Great Britain at the end of 1974. The GDR authorities did not let the public know about Benes' sentence. However, it can be assumed that he was also sentenced to imprisonment for attempting to escape from the GDR .

In the summer of 1977 Benes was announced as the new coach of the GDR league club BSG Chemie PCK Schwedt . A year later he took over the training of BSG Chemie Ilmenau for two seasons , which he took over as a newcomer to the GDR league and was able to achieve relegation twice with her. 1980 Benes moved to the third-class district league for Stahl Finow . Within a year he also led the team into the GDR league, but had to be relegated again in 1982. After that, Benes did not appear in higher-class teams.
