Linke is the name of an Austrian electoral alliance that ran for the first time in the 2008 National Council election and achieved a result of 0.044% with a total of 2,138 votes. The demands for the election campaign included concrete steps against price increases , a minimum wage of 1,100 euros, a referendum on amendments to the EU Treaty ( see Lisbon Treaty ), wage increases and free access to education for all. The goal of the electoral alliance is to build a new force to the left of the SPÖ and the Greens . The long-term goal is to overcome capitalism through abe socialist democracy .

Political profile

The alliance was founded in summer 2008 and is made up of organizations and individuals from different political directions. Among them are the ATIGF , the DIDF , the Communist Initiative , the League of Socialist Revolution and the Socialist Left Party as well as some works councils and activists from other areas such as David Stockinger (member of the state board of the SJ Lower Austria), the cabaret artist Simon Pichler or the social anthropologist Leo Gabriel , top candidate of the KPÖ -near LINKE list in the 2004 European elections .

The medium-term goal of the alliance is to build a new political force to the left of the SPÖ, the Greens and the LIF , “which will actively campaign against social cuts and racism” before and after the elections. The SPÖ is made responsible for the “privatization of the nationalized, downsizing in the public service, racist immigration laws and cuts in education”. According to the top candidate Sonja Grusch in Upper Austria, the Greens “voted against the equality of homosexual partnerships” and are “responsible in the government for the privatization of Energie AG ”. In its program, the alliance is committed to building a socialist society "without the exploitation of people and nature and without oppression".

history

At the first meeting on July 5, 2008, the Left Project called itself “left advice”. The electoral alliance sees itself as part of an international development where new left formations are emerging in various countries, such as the Die Linke party in Germany . The focus is on disappointed voters and activists of the Social Democrats and the Greens as well as activists from various social movements. The candidacy for the 2008 National Council elections is seen as the first step in building such a new party. At the beginning the Communist Party of Austria stood ready for such an alliance. However, due to existing programmatic differences, it ultimately decided to run independently and, with 34,107 votes (0.8%), achieved far more than the "Left" who had appeared for the first time.

On July 7, 2008 the ÖVP terminated the coalition with the SPÖ and new elections were called. A meeting then took place on July 19, to which the Socialist Left Party, the League of Socialist Revolution and representatives of the Austrian Social Forum had invited. At this nationwide meeting, it was decided to run for the elections with an overwhelming majority of over 100 participants. A team of coordinators was elected.

On August 13, 2008 it was announced that the 500 necessary declarations of support for running in the National Council election in Vienna had been achieved. The candidacy with the required 200 declarations of support was submitted in Salzburg on August 19th. Overall, the left stood in the national elections in Austria in five federal states: Burgenland, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, Vienna. The party missed the basic mandate in all constituencies (this would have required around 20,000-30,000 votes in one constituency) as well as the nationwide 4% threshold.
