Until 1958 Feister was a junior player of the BSG Wismut in the Ore Mountains town of Annaberg . In 1959, at the age of 16, he moved to SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt , whose men's team played in the third-class second GDR league that year . In the club's junior team, he was soon among the best and in 1960 he was accepted into the squad of the GDR junior national team. On October 7, 1960 he came in the encounter GDR - Czechoslovakia (3-1) to his only junior international match, in which he was used as a left midfielder. In addition to his footballing activities, he also completed training as a measurement technician.

When the SC Motor was promoted to the top league of the GDR football league after the 1961/62 season, Feister, who was now entitled to play for the men's division and was 1.76 m tall, was also involved in the success. In the following season began his career as a league player, in which he was initially used as a midfielder, later in the defense area. He also excelled in the new environment with good performances, so that he again came into the focus of the selection coaches. In the summer of 1964 he was called up in two international matches of the GDR youth team. In January and February 1967 Feister was part of the GDR national team for a trip to Egypt, Sudan and Iraq. However, the games played there were not counted as official internationals.

Feister experienced the high point of his career in the 1966/67 season, when his team, now performing as FC Karl-Marx-Stadt, surprisingly became East German champions. He had played in all 26 point games and distinguished himself as a central defensive player. His name became part of the new battle cry of the FCK supporters: "Erler, Vogel, Feister - the FCK becomes champions". By winning the championship title, the Karl-Marx-Städter qualified for the subsequent European championship season. Feister came to two more international assignments in the fall of 1967. In the two games against the Belgian champions RSC Anderlecht Feister was again a defender, but after the two defeats (1: 3 and 1: 2) Feister's team was eliminated in the first round. In the national cup competition for the FDGB-Pokal , Feister reached the final with FCK in 1969, but lost here with his team with a 4-0 defeat against 1. FC Magdeburg . Feister's time at FC Karl-Marx-Stadt ended with the 1968/69 season. In his eight league years he played in 140 league games, three championship goals go to his account.

For two years Feister joined the lower-class BSG Motor Fritz Heckert Karl-Marx-Stadt , then moved back to the upper league at BSG Sachsenring Zwickau at the beginning of the 1971/72 season . By the end of the 1972/73 season Feister had again completed 33 league games. After that, his league career was finally over, Feister went back to 1973 Karl-Marx-Stadt, and began his career with the third-class district league playing BSG Motor Ascota continued. With her he managed as team captain in 1977 for one year promotion to the GDR league. After the 1978/79 season, Fritz Feister finally ended his career as a football player at the age of 36.

The fact that he was elected treasurer of the Chemnitz Football District Association in 1994 proves that he remained connected to football.
