Gerhard Marotzke 1955

Gerhard Marotzke (born September 30, 1929 ) was a soccer player in the GDR and completed an international match with the GDR national team .

The first stop in Gerhard Marotzke's football career was VP Schwerin , one of the numerous police sports associations that were founded in East Germany after the Second World War. While the Dynamo teams from 1950 its service center at Dynamo Dresden had been for Kasernierte People's Police , the forerunner of the National People's Army, in the summer of 1951, the sports association forward Leipzig founded. It was incorporated into the league , the highest football class in the GDR, as the 19th team for the 1951/52 season without any athletic qualifications . After disappointing performances by the thrown together team, the squad was heavily upgraded for the coming season. Eight new players were brought to Leipzig from numerous police groups, including 23-year-old Gerhard Marotzke. Despite the increase, the quality of the team did not improve, after five match days it was only 13th in the league. As a result , eight players were poached by local rivals Chemie Leipzig , GDR champion in 1951. Although there were three national players among the poached players, the performance of the forward team did not improve, and they were largely treated with hostility by the Leipzig football audience because of the poaching maneuver. Under these circumstances, the central sports association Vorwärts decided to relocate the entire team to Berlin in the middle of the current season. From April 1953, ZASK Vorwärts Berlin started . All of these measures were ultimately unsuccessful, because at the end of the season the team had to relegate to the second division.

In the GDR league , the forward players finally grew into a strong team and ended the 1953/54 season as a sovereign re-emergence. Marotzke had been used 24 times in the 26 point games. His team crowned their performance on July 3, 1954 by winning the GDR soccer cup after a 2-1 victory over Motor Zwickau . Marotzke was a central defender of the game. In the following years Vorwärts Berlin developed into a real top team and won their first championship title in 1958. This season Marotzke competed 17 times for forward.

The strong defender had meanwhile also been used for international appearances. In the autumn of 1954 he had completed two games in the B national team, and on September 18, 1955 he was used as a left defender in the game of the A national team against Romania in Bucharest. In view of the strong competition in his positions as a central or left defender, including Werner Eilitz and Bringfried Müller , this was an A international match.

In 1960, Gerhard Marotzke became soccer champion again with Vorwärts Berlin, but was only involved in this success with four point games. At just under 30, he had clearly exceeded his performance peak, and so he ended his active career in the summer of 1960. In the top GDR football class, he had 111 point games and scored two goals as a defender.
