San Giovanni in Sinis
The church of San Giovanni in Sinis is located near Cabras on the Sinis peninsula in the province of Oristano in Sardinia , right next to the Phoenician - Punic necropolis of the ancient city of Tharros . The burial ground was still used in early Christian times, as evidenced by a number of artifacts .
San Giovanni di Sinis is one of the most interesting ecclesiastical and oldest Byzantine churches in Sardinia. Today's three-aisled church is the result of a later modification of a cross-shaped Byzantine church from the 6th or 7th century, which was built in Roman ashlar construction. It had a strong influence on the church buildings of the following epochs. From the outside, the cubic elements with the central elevation through a dome over the crossing , the oldest part of the church, are clearly visible. Inside there are battle cornices , bulky pillars connected by archivolts and traces of former barrel vaults .
