Sinis (peninsula)
The Sinis peninsula ( Italian Penisola del Sinis ) is located in the west of Sardinia in the province of Oristano , which was once the Arborea judiciary , next to the wide beaches , some of which consist of coarse coral sands, and the dry steppe landscape around the stagni ( lagoons ). The 19 km long and up to 5.8 km wide peninsula extends between Capo Mannu in the north and Capo San Marco. Below the Stagno di Cabras (inland lake) with protected flamingo colonies , several cultural evidence can be seen:
- San Giovanni di Sinis , one of the oldest churches in Italy (in Byzantine style).
- the Ipogeo di San Salvatore , under the San Salvatore Sanctuary
- Tharros , the ruins of the Punic city rediscovered in the 19th century .
- Torre San Giovanni (17th century) and Torre Vecchia, two Saracen towers
The prehistoric oven graves from Cuccuru S'Arriu and the finds from Monte Prama can only be explored in museums.
The holiday home areas “Capu Mannu” and “Is Arenas” are located on the peninsula, whose beaches as well as the offshore island of Mal di Ventre are marine protected areas. Around 150 bird species breed in and around the large, shallow lakes; including shags (relatives of the cormorant), purple grouse (Porphyrio), little egrets (Egretta garzetta) and some species of falcon.
