Günter Melchior (born November 14, 1929 ) is a former soccer goalkeeper. For SC Chemie Halle-Leuna , he played 39 games in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , between 1954 and 1958 . In 1956 he won the GDR Cup with the SC Chemie.

Athletic career

Günter Melchior began his career as a football goalkeeper in the 1952/53 season, when the previous goalkeeper left the fourth-rate team of Chemie Weißwasser . Melchior had previously been an outfield player, but when he was tested as a goalkeeper by the coach, he was so convincing that he was future number one in Weißwasser's goal. In 1954 he rose with his team in the district league , a year later in the second-rate GDR league . There he was in goal in 24 point games for Chemie Weißwasser. Two game days before the end of the season, Melchior moved to the top division club SC Chemie Halle-Leuna, who had not found a full replacement for his injured goalkeeper Wolfgang Meininger and was in acute danger of relegation. Just three days after his last GDR league appearance, Melchior already played his first league game in the Halle goal.

SC Chemie could no longer avert relegation, and so Melchior played again in the GDR league from summer 1955. To convert GDR football operations to the calendar year rhythm, a transition round with 13 games was held in the GDR league by December 1955, in which Melchior was ten times in the goal of Chemie Halle-Leuna. In the 1956 season, the chemists managed to return to the league immediately, and Melchior played 20 of the 26 point games. At the end of the season, SC Chemie Halle-Leuna won the GDR soccer cup with Melchior in goal. In the 1957 league season, Melchior continued to be number one in the Halle goal with 22 appearances in 26 games. In 1958 he played all 13 point games in the first half of the season, but then no longer appeared in the squad of the league team of the newly formed SC Chemie Halle (merger with SC Wissenschaft Halle ). Even after that, he no longer played in higher-class football. When Hallesche FC Chemie was founded in 1966, Melchior took over responsibility for finance and economics on the board.
