Thomas Ludwig (born June 21, 1960 in Weimar ) is a former Thuringian soccer player. For FC Carl Zeiss Jena he played first division football in the GDR Oberliga , and he was also active in the 2nd Bundesliga for one season .

Athletic career

Ludwig began his football career with the agricultural company sports association (BSG) in Frankendorf, Thuringia . At the age of ten he moved to the district town of BSG Motor Weimar , where he played with the first team in the second-rate GDR league from 1978 . After completing school, he completed an apprenticeship as an industrial fitter.

At the beginning of the 1982/83 season, the 1.79 m tall Ludwig moved to the league club FC Carl Zeiss Jena. There he immediately played the first three point games as a midfielder, then he was used more irregularly, but came in his first league season on a total of 20 point game stakes. In the following seasons he did not succeed in playing into the starting eleven. After he played only one league game on the 1st game day in 1984/85, he came back to the league team only from the 11th game day in 1985/86. From then on he was used as a defender, mainly as a stopper . In this position he was also on June 4, 1988 in the final of the GDR soccer cup, which the Jena lost 2-0 in extra time. In the following season 1988/89 Ludwig had his most point game stakes with 24 games. Then his career stalled again, because in 1989/90 he only played eleven times, in 1990/91 only five times in the league.

In the latter season, FC Carl Zeiss qualified for the 2nd Bundesliga. Ludwig's debut in professional football was promising at the beginning of the 1991/92 season. Playing in the defense of Jena, the now 31-year-old played the first 13 point games without interruption. By the winter break he had a total of 17 championship games, after which he had to give up his career in competitive sports due to injury.

Ludwig completed ten seasons for FC Carl Zeiss Jena and made 179 competitive appearances in which he scored nine goals as a defensive player. In the GDR Oberliga he played 120 games with three goals and 17 games in the 2nd Bundesliga without scoring. There were also 21 GDR cup games with another three goals. In the 12 European Cup games that Jena played during his playing days, Ludwig scored twice in nine games. There are also twelve games in the Intertoto competition , in which Ludwig remained goalless.
