history

There were several school buildings in Königsee around 1870. They were located below the town church and were in poor condition. 70 to 90 pupils studied in the too small rooms with little light and poor equipment. The construction of a new school was only approved on April 9, 1886. The most important construction work should be completed by June 1, 1887. With enough building materials and a large workforce, mostly local craftsmen, the school could be completed on October 18, 1887. The inauguration began at 10 a.m. with a pageant, bells ringing, speeches and school tours. Rector Schürg received an official apartment in the school building. The new classrooms were high and well ventilated. In the city, the building was considered a prototype.

But soon defects appeared again. The class sizes were again between 60 and 70 students. There were problems with the chimneys and stoves, walls cracked, plaster crumbled and the building sagged. The deficiencies were remedied under Rector Eberhardt. In 1914 the First World War put an end to the efforts.

In the GDR era, the school was a so-called Polytechnic Oberschule (POS). With the fall of the Wall it became the largest general education school in the district. In the 1990/91 school year the Goethe School had 780 pupils in 40 classes.

With the completion of the newly built Dr.-Max-Näder-Gymnasium in Königsee in 1996 a restructuring took place, the Goethe School gradually changed from a regular school to a primary school.
