The Köditzberg – Königsee railway was a railway line in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia that connected the city of Königsee to the railway network.

history

The railway line was built at the same time as the Schwarzatalbahn on the basis of a state treaty between Prussia (client) and Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (location) from January 30, 1895. The line between Rottenbach and Königsee was opened on December 16, 1899. Six months later, the Schwarzatalbahn also went into operation, which branches off to the south at Köditzberg station and leads to Katzhütte .

Shortly after the opening, voices were heard from the industry calling for an extension of the railway line beyond Königsee to Gehren in the west to the Ilmenau – Großbreitenbach railway line , but this eight-kilometer-long gap was no longer realized.

In 1944 there were seven pairs of passenger trains running on weekdays and four on Sundays, usually between Königsee and Rottenbach.

Passenger traffic on the line ended on August 1, 1966, and it was completely closed on December 31, 1972.

Route

The line began about 2.5 kilometers west of Rottenbach at the Köditzberg separation station and ran from there through the valley of the Rinne to the west via the Unterköditz stop to Königsee, where it ended on the southeastern outskirts of the city.
