Kiğı (Kurdish: Gêxi) is a city and a district of the same name in the province of Bingöl in eastern Turkey . The city is located 75 km from the city of Bingöl. Many Alevis live in the city of Kiğı .
The district is one of the smallest in the province in terms of area and population. Between 1987 and 1990 it lost three quarters (77.5%) of its original size by splitting off the new Adaklı , Yayladere and Yedisu counties . The district is in the northwest of the province of Bingöl, its population density is slightly below the provincial average of 63 inhabitants per km².
The district is bordered by Yedisu County in the north, Yayladere County in the southwest, Adaklı County in the east and the Central County ( Merkez ) in the south . It has cross-provincial borders with Pülümür County ( Tunceli Province ) in the northwest and Karakoçan County ( Elazığ Province ).
The district town of Kiğı is home to around 56 percent of the district's population. The rest is spread over 25 villages ( Köy ), which are inhabited by an average of 87 inhabitants. Nacaklı is the largest village with 394 inhabitants.
history
As in other areas of Anatolia, the history of Kiğı goes back to the time of the Hittites . Some other empires or peoples who ruled Kiğı were the Urartians , Medes , Persians , Alexander the Great , Seleucids , Romans, Byzantium, Arabs , Aq Qoyunlu , Seljuks, and Ottomans .
The origin of the name Kiğı is unknown. The place developed around the fortress Kiğı, which was probably built by the Urartians. In 1616 the fortress was so badly damaged by an earthquake that the location was moved to its current location. The remains of the fortress are now in the village of Topraklı.
At the beginning of the 16th century, Kiğı was under the rule of the Iranian Safavids . In 1514 the Ottomans defeated the Safavids and incorporated Eastern Anatolia. From 1663 Kiğı was a sandjak , which was attached to the Vilayet Diyarbakır. In 1926 Kiğı became part of Erzincan and then in 1936 Bingöl. In the 1980s, Adaklı, Yayladere and Yedisu were separated from Kiğı and became independent counties within Bingöl.
