Hüseyin Erdem

Hüseyin Erdem (* 1949 in Yayladere , Bingöl Province , Turkey ) is a Kurdish writer and screenwriter from Turkey who publishes in German, Turkish and Kurdish. In 1988 he was the initiator and founding chairman of the Kurdish PEN center .

life and work

Erdem grew up in Istanbul and later studied law at Istanbul University. From 1969 to 1976 he was editor of the Turkish literary magazine Yeni Ufuklar - New Horizons . In 1980 he emigrated to Germany, where he initially worked as a member of the editorial board of the Turkish-language newspaper Demokratie Türkiye . At the University of Cologne he then studied German, Slavic, as well as international law and general linguistics. In 1984 he founded the Institute for Turkology and Kurdology and has been teaching there not only Turkish and Kurdish languages, literature and linguistics, but also Ottoman studies. He also works as a freelancer for West German Broadcasting.

In Germany, Erdem was first perceived by a larger audience in literary terms within the "Gastarbeiterliteratur" - anthology of approaches - prose, poetry and photographs from everyday life as a guest worker , which was published in 1982 by Franco Biondi , Jusuf Naoum and Rafik Schami .

In 1985 he published the Kurdish fairy tale Siyabend and Xecê , which he told in German and Kurdish and based on an old Kurdish legend, as a bilingual picture book. In 1991 the book was filmed as a German-Turkish co-production (Senar Film / WDR). Erdem also wrote the script for this film, which is often referred to as the first ever Kurdish-language feature film.

Erdem's radio play The Fire Will Never Go Out (1986), which is dedicated to the Kurdish minority in Turkey, was produced by WDR. Another radio contribution by Erdems ( Turkish songs about foreign lands ) was awarded the Civis Media Prize in 1991 .

At the international PEN conference in Cambridge in 1988, Hüseyin Erdem, who has been teaching Kurdology at the University of Cologne since 1984, initiated a process that led to the establishment of a Kurdish PEN center, the majority of which now live in Germany. Erdem was supported by other PEN centers and various Kurdish authors. Erdem is also a longstanding member of the German PEN center .
