Zabelle C. Boyajian ( Armenian Զապել Պոյաճեան ; * 1873 in Diyarbakır , † January 26, 1957 in London ) was an Ottoman - Armenian painter , writer and translator .

Zabelle Boyajian was born in Vilayet Diyarbekir as the daughter of the British Vice Consul in Diyarbakır and Harput , Baron Thomas Boyajian, and Catherine Rogers, a granddaughter of the poet Samuel Rogers. Her father Thomas was murdered during the Diyarbakır massacre in 1895 , which is why Zabelle had to emigrate to London with her mother and brother . In London, she attended the Slade School of Fine Art and began writing and illustrating her own books. Her first novel, Esther , was about the Hamid massacre in Sasun and was published in London in 1901 under her author's name Vardeni . She was very close to Anna Raffi, the wife of the Armenian writer Raffi , as well as her two sons Aram and Arshak, who all moved to London after Raffi's death. Boyajian translated and published excerpts from Raffi's novels in Ararat magazine and organized several reading evenings to preserve the memory of his work. In 1916 she collected and translated the anthology Armenian Legends and Poems (1916), presented by Viscount James Bryce , which contained several poems in Alice Stone Blackwell's translation. Boyajian traveled across Europe and in 1938 published her travel notes and pictures from Greece , In Greece with Pen and Palette . In 1948 she translated and published Avetik Issahakjan's epic poem Abu Lala Mahari . She also wrote essays on Shakespeare , Byron , Euripides , Michael Arlen, Raffi and Avetik Issahakian, as well as comparative works on English and Armenian literature .

As a painter, Zabelle Boyajian had solo exhibitions in London (1910 and 1912), in Germany (1920), in Egypt (1928) and between 1940 and 1950 in France, Italy and Belgium.
