Not far from the Presidential Palace on the Quirinal is the Palazzo del Viminale, which houses the Ministry of the Interior .

The Viminal ( Italian Monte Viminale , Latin Collis Viminalis ) is the smallest of the classic seven hills of Rome . It runs between the Quirinal and the Esquiline , each separated by two traffic trains running on ancient road axes, which run to the Piazza della Repubblica (Quirinal) and Santa Maria Maggiore (Esquiline). Today the Italian Ministry of the Interior has its seat on the 49 meter high hill in the Palazzo del Viminale ; So if you hear about the Viminale in Italian news , the Ministry of the Interior is meant.

Other important facilities on the Viminal are the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma (near Piazza della Repubblica ) from 1879 and the Istituto centrale di patologia del libro museum from 1938.

history

Like the neighboring Quirinal, the Viminal belonged to the ancient Roman tribe of Collina (the two hills were the only ones that were called collis and not mons "mountain") and was originally settled by Sabines . The Collis Viminalis ("Willow Hill") served mainly as a residential area and had only a few public buildings. In the district of today's Roma Termini there was a shrine to Jupiter Viminalis. The basins of the aqueducts Aqua Tepula , Iulia and Marcia were also located here . The Servian Wall with the Porta Viminalis ran along the east side of the Viminals .

Since the Augustan times Viminal and Quirinal belonged to the 6th region (Alta Semita) , today to Monti .

The Baths of Diocletian and the Praetorian camp were also located on the Viminal .
