history

Course of the Aqua Tepula (red)
Porta Maggiore , crossing point of the Aqua Tepula and the Aqua Marcia with the Aqua Claudia and the Anio Novus

The Aqua Tepula was founded in 125 BC. Built by the censors Gnaeus Servilius Caepio and Lucius Cassius Longinus Ravilla . Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa let them be 33 BC. Connect with the Aqua Iulia . Between 11 and 4 BC It was repaired under Emperor Augustus .

The name was derived from the temperature of the water that arrived lukewarm in Rome.

Water flow

The source of the Aqua Tepula is located near the Via Latina near Tusculum east of Rome. Agrippa increased the flow by feeding the previous canal with water from the Aqua Julia. The approximately 18 km long water pipeline delivered 19,000 cubic meters per day.

The Aqua Tepula reached the city of Rome at Porta Maggiore , where it crossed the Aqua Claudia and the Anio Novus together with the Aqua Marcia . From there it then follows the same route as the Marcia aqueduct, which runs through Porta Viminal , unlike Aqua Tepula, it supplies the Aventine .
