Marino (also Marino Laziale ) is a city with 45,922 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Alban Mountains above Lake Alban , 23 km southeast of Rome and 6 km south of Frascati in the metropolitan city of Rome .

geography

The old town of Marino lies on the edge of the caldera of an extinct volcano above Lake Alban . The municipality extends into the plain of the Campagna Romana . The districts of Castelluccia, Cava dei Selci, Due Santi, Frattocchie, Fontana Sala and Santa Maria delle Mole are located in the western part of the municipality along the Via Appia and are now the residential areas for most of the Marinesi. In 1974 Ciampino was spun off from Marino as an independent municipality. Since 1993 efforts have been made in the suburbs of Frattocchie and Santa Maria delle Mole to form an independent community under the name of Boville .

Marino is counted among the localities of the Castelli Romani .

The neighboring towns are Castel Gandolfo , Ciampino , Grottaferrata , Rocca di Papa and Rome .

traffic

Marino is connected to Rome by Via dei Laghi . The western parts of the city are accessed with the state road 7 Via Appia , whereby the Via Appia Antica and the Via Appia Nuova merge in Frattocchie. The state road 207 Via Nettunense leads from Frattocchie to Anzio (43 km) to the sea.

Marino has a train station on the FR4 Rome – Albano regional line . Santa Maria delle Mole train station on the FR4 Rome – Velletri regional line is in the northwest of the municipality.

history

In pre-Roman times there were three places in the municipality.

After the conquest of Rome, Castrimoenium was founded. The aqueduct of the Aqua Tepula started from here. In 313 AD Constantine the Great donated the site to the cathedral of Albano . In the 10th century the place came under the name of Possessio Marinas in the possession of the Counts of Tusculum and later the Frangipane and finally in 1266 the Orsini . In 1419 the Colonna conquered Marino.

In 1870 the Papal State was dissolved and Marino was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy .
