Herbert Kenneth Airy Shaw

Herbert Kenneth Airy Shaw (born April 7, 1902 in The Mound, Grange Road, Woodbridge , Suffolk , England , † August 19, 1985 ) was an English botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Airy Shaw ".

Life

His father Herbert Alfred Shaw was a "second master" at the Grammar School in Woodbridge; his mother's maiden name was Agnes Margaret Airy; one of her ancestors was the astronomer and mathematician Sir George Biddell Airy (1801-1892).

In the autumn of 1921 he began studying "classics" (Latin and Greek) at Corpus Christi College in Cambridge . In autumn 1923 he switched to natural history, where he received the title "BA" in 1924. In August 1925 he began, initially as an unpaid "Temporary Technical Assistant", at the herbarium in Kew. Only in 1929 did he get a paid post there.

He specialized in the flora of tropical Asia and the milkweed family (Euphorbiaceae).

Honors

The genus Airyantha from the legume family (Fabaceae) is named after him.
