The Ida Mountains ( Turkish Kaz Dağı , Goose Mountain ) are located in northwestern Turkey , in the Troas region . Its highest point, the Kırklar Tepesi, which in ancient times was called Gargara ( Greek  Γάργαρα ; also Gargaros or Γάργαρον Gargaron ), is 1,774 m above sea level. M. The center of the mountains has been a national park called Kazdağı National Park ( Turkish Kazdağı Millî Parkı ) since 1991 . The controversial gold mine project in the Ida Mountains has been under construction here since 2017 .

The mountain represents a transition zone between the Black Sea climate, which is still noticeable at the end of the Marmara Sea, and the Mediterranean climate. The number of endemic plants is estimated at 15.

As with the mountains of the same name on Crete (see Psiloritis ), the name means "mountain of the goddess". What is meant is the pre-Greek mother-deity called De or Da .

The Ida Mountains in Asia Minor were the scene of several important events in Greek mythology . Paris , son of Priam and Hecabe , was abandoned in the Ida Mountains after the dream interpreter Aisakos had prophesied the fall of Troy if Paris grew up. Zeus watched the battles of the Trojan War from the highest peak . The mountain was sacred to Hera , who seduced Zeus here in order to distract him from the Trojan fighting. But the judgment of Paris , which set the prehistory of the Trojan War in motion, took place in these mountains: Paris was herding sheep here when suddenly the goddesses Aphrodite , Athena and Hera appeared to him and asked him to choose the most beautiful among them.

Anchises was seduced by Aphrodite here earlier ; together they begat Aeneas . The Trojan prince Ganymede was kidnapped here by Zeus in the form of an eagle and brought to Olympus , where from then on he served the gods as cupbearer.

The oldest version of the Sibylline Books seems to have been written at the time of Cyrus in Gergis on the Ida Mountains. It was ascribed to the Hellespontine Sibyl and was kept in the temple of Apollo at Gergis. From here the oracle collection found its way to Erythrai , where it became famous - from there the development continues to the Sibyl of Cumae and from there to the Sibylline Books of Rome .

Sarıkız legend

The Ida Mountains also play a role in the Turkish Sarı kız legend (»blonde girl legend«), which has spread to Persia.
