Susurluk is a city in the Ilçe (district) of the same name in the Turkish province of Balıkesir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Balıkesir (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 2012 . Since a regional reform in 2013, the district town has been identical in area and population to the district.

It was settled by Bulgarian , Caucasian and Turkmen refugees in 1877/1878 after the Ottoman-Russian War . According to the city logo, the place was upgraded to a parish in 1901 .

In the area around Susurluk mainly agricultural products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt are industrially produced. The place is known nationwide for its cheese toast, the "Susurluk Tostu" and its Ayran .

The place became famous through the traffic accident in Susurluk on November 3, 1996 , where a political connection between the Mafia , police and state was exposed and triggered a government crisis in the government of Prime Minister Tansu Çiller ; The right-wing terrorist and drug trafficker Abdullah Çatlı , a leading member of the right-wing extremist organization “ Gray Wolves ”, was killed in the accident, while the DYP MP and leader of several village protection units , Sedat Edip Bucak , was seriously injured. Due to the pressure and discussions about the involvement of the Turkish state in illegal activities (see Deep State ), the then Interior Minister Mehmet Ağar and several senior officials resigned.
