Ziya Guler

Ziya Güler (born August 18, 1952 in Bandırma , Balıkesir Province ) is a former Turkish Lieutenant General of the Air Force (Hava Kuvetleri) , who was most recently in command of the Air Force Staff Academy (Hava Harp Akademisi) . In 2011 he was arrested in the course of the Balyoz affair and sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment before being released in 2014.

Life

Guler entered the cadet institute (Askeri Hava Lisesi) in 1966 and began his officer training at the Air Force Academy (Hava Harp Okulu) in 1969 , which he graduated as a lieutenant on August 30, 1972 . After completing his pilot training in the 2nd training base in Çiğli , he was transferred as a pilot to the 5th Air Force Base in Merzifon in 1975 and then back to the 2nd training base in 1979. After graduating from the Air Force Staff Academy (Hava Harp Akademisi) he was transferred to the Air Force Academy in 1983, where he was commander of the student regiment and battalion commander of the academy. This was followed by assignments as a training officer in the 9th Air Force Base in Balikesir and the 192nd Multipurpose Squadron stationed there, before he was Air Force Attaché at the Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany .

After his return, Güler was initially commander of the 193rd multipurpose squadron and then commander of the 191st multipurpose squadron, which was also stationed in Balikesir. He was then transferred to the headquarters of the Air Force as a staff officer, where he was first coordinator and then general secretary. Thereupon he was first head of the examination and assessment department and finally head of the operations department of the 4th Air Force Base at the Akıncı military airfield .

On August 30, 1998, Güler was promoted to Brigadier General (Tuğgeneral) and appointed head of the Air Defense Department at the Air Force Headquarters. He then worked as a defense attaché at the embassy in the United States and, on his return, commander of the 6th Air Force Base in Bandirma . On August 30, 2002, he was promoted to major general (Tümgeneral) and appointed head of the intelligence department at the Air Force Headquarters. Then he was initially deputy commander of the Air Force Training Command (Hava Eğitim Komutanlığı) in Izmir and commander of the Staff Academy of the Air Force (Hava Harp Akademisi) .

In 2006 Guler was promoted to lieutenant general (co- general ) by the Supreme Military Council of Turkey (Yüksek Askerî Şûra) . As such, he was commander of the Air Force Training Command (Hava Eğitim Komutanlığı) and was arrested in 2011 as part of the Balyoz investigation. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison for alleged involvement in the Balyoz conspiracy and was released from Istanbul's Hasdal Prison in June 2014 after serving three years in prison.
