Merzifon (formerly also Marsovan or Marsvani ) is a district town and a district in Turkey . It belongs to the Amasya Province and is located in the Black Sea region . The city lies on the southern slope of the Tavşan Mountain and borders a fertile plain. The district town is home to almost 80 percent of the district's population.

The current city of Merzifon is located on the site of the ancient city of Phazemon (Φαζημὠν). Little is known about the history of the city since the Islamization of Anatolia . In the Middle Ages the area of the city was called Marsvani . Merzifon was part of the Turkish Beyliks of the Danishmenden in the 11th and 12th centuries , then part of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum . In 1393 Merzifon fell to the Ottomans . Merzifon was home to several Ottoman scholars and high dignitaries.

The Merzifon district is located in the west of the province and borders the provinces of Çorum (in the south) and Samsun (in the north). The second most populous district in the province is also above the provincial average with its population density (79.2). In addition to the district town, it consists of 70 villages ( Köy ) with an average population of 213 inhabitants. Kayadüzü (1,415) and Muşruf (1,035) are the only villages with over a thousand inhabitants.

religion

In the city, some Byzantine churches have been converted into mosques. Examples of this are the Eski Cami (German: old mosque), the madrasa of Mehemmed Çelebi and a building complex that was built by the Ottoman Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pascha in the 17th century. There were some dervishes in town - tekkes .

American Protestant missionaries built a theological school and charitable institutions in Merzifon from 1864; from 1886 to 1924 the prestigious Anatolia College existed here . In the 1930s a small part of the missionary institutions were still active. This missionary work was aimed at the Armenian residents of the area. Until the end of the First World War , Christian Armenians and Greeks lived in Merzifon alongside the Muslims . In addition to the Protestant school, there was also a Roman Catholic and a Gregorian school.
