Tahsin Şahinkaya

Tahsin Şahinkaya (born May 1, 1925 in Merzifon , Amasya Province ; † July 9, 2015 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish general who was commander of the air force (Hava Kuvvetleri) between 1978 and 1983 and a member of the National Security Council (Millî Güvenlik Konseyi) was.

Life

After attending school, Şahinkaya joined the armed forces and graduated from the military academy , from which he was released as a lieutenant in 1943 . After a subsequent training at the infantry school in Çankırı , an internship at the aviation training school in Eskişehir followed, which was followed by pilot training in the USA in 1944 . After returning to Turkey in 1946, he became a lieutenant pilot at the flight training school in Eskişehir, before he was commissioned to set up the air reconnaissance school in Eskişehir after another course in the USA in 1949.

After Sahinkaya a course at the Academy of the Air Force from 1955 to 1957 (Hava Harp Akademisi) had graduated, he was appointed deputy commander of the 3rd Air Reconnaissance Wing and was then from 1964 to 1966 Air Force officer in the headquarters of Allied Forces South Europe of NATO in Naples .

Upon his return, he was promoted to Brigadier General and Commander of the 6th Main Jet Aircraft Command in Bandırma . In 1969 he was promoted to major general and deputy commander of the Air Force Academy and then in 1971 to deputy commander of the air force. In 1972 he became the commander of the Air Force Academy.

In 1973, Şahinkaya was promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed Executive Chief of the General Staff of the Air Force, First Deputy Commander of the Air Force, and a military representative at the Central Treaty Organization (CENTO).

After he was promoted to general in 1977, he became Secretary General of the National Security Council (Millî Güvenlik Kurulu) . On August 21, 1978, he succeeded General Ethem Ayan as commander of the Turkish Air Force and held this position for five years until December 6, 1983.

When the military coup in Turkey came on September 12, 1980 under the leadership of Chief of Staff Kenan Evren , he also became a member of the National Security Council and was a member of it until December 6, 1983.

For his services he was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Turkish Republic ( Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Üstün Hizmet Madalyası ).

On April 4, 2012, a trial of him and Kenan Evren began for overturning the constitutional order. If convicted, both faced life imprisonment. Co-plaintiffs were victims' associations as well as the Turkish government and the national assembly . As early as mid-January 2012, it became known that the charges against him should also include possible allegations of bribery in connection with the purchase of General Dynamics F-16 multi -role fighter aircraft for the air force. In June 2014 Evren and Şahinkaya were sentenced to life imprisonment .
